The SHSAT stands for Specialized High School Admissions Test, which the 8th and 9th grader students take to gain admissions to some great/elite schools in New York City. The following is the list of such schools:
Bronx High School
of Science
Brooklyn Latin
Brooklyn Technical
High School
High School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College
High School of American Studies at Lehman College
Queens High School for the Sciences at York
Staten Island Technical High School (newly designated)
Stuyvesant High
School
The good news or the bad news (however you wish to take it) is that these schools will only look at your SHSAT scores to count you in or out of their elite programs. For that reason, it is essential that you give it all you got and secure high scores on the SHSAT. Please not that you must live in one of the five boroughs of NYC to take the SHSAT.
The SHSAT test is offered in late October for 8th graders and mid–November for 9th graders. (Though the 9th grade exam provides a second chance for those not initially accepted, it is not recommended to wait until 9th grade to take the test.)
You should register for the SHSAT through your school counselor.
